One night, two original plays

The moment the lights dimmed inside Terra Kulture Arena on September 20th, 2025, a hush swept through the hall. In that instant, the audience ceased to be mere spectators; they became part of an experience that came alive as two original Nigerian theatre productions unfolded on stage.

This was TALP-X, the quarterly stage showcase of the Terra Academy for the Arts (TAFTA), where students transform classroom lessons into unforgettable live performances. More than a showcase, TALP-X is TAFTA’s way of introducing fresh voices to the theatre world and proving the creativity of TAFTA participants.

This fifth edition carried a special promise: two original plays, one ticket. And the productions — Kingmaker and Book Cover — delivered both entertainment and meaning.

Kingmaker: a story of gender and power

Kingmaker told the gripping story of a young woman determined to challenge a patriarchal tradition that only allowed men to become kingmakers. Her defiance and resilience mirrored the broader struggle for gender equality and cultural change in society.

Book Cover: comedy, class and Afrobeat energy

Book Cover offered a witty take on the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Through music, comedy, and family drama, the play explored class divides, hidden flaws, and the contrast between outward appearances and inner realities, all wrapped in the vibrant energy of Afrobeat.

Industry reaction & notable guests

The evening drew notable figures from Nigeria’s creative industry, including theatre practitioner and arts consultant, Dr. Afeez Oyetoro. Oyetoro lauded the quality of the storytelling and performances. “The creativity and professionalism displayed by these young talents is remarkable. TALP-X is not just entertainment; it is education, social critique, and a training ground for the future of theatre in Nigeria,” he said.

TAFTA’s Founder and CEO, Bolanle Austen-Peters, who was also in attendance, expressed pride and praised the performances of the participants: “I am so proud of what our trainees are doing. TALP is giving them the opportunity to practically showcase what they have been studying. My vision is to expand TALP beyond Lagos into other cities, so more young creatives can share their voices and talents with the world.”

TAFTA’s X Mastercard Mission

Mr Joseph Umoibom, Academy Lead at TAFTA emphasized that TALP-X is designed to nurture the next generation of actors, storytellers, and creatives who can reshape the landscape of Nigerian theatre productions.

With support from partners like Mastercard, the Terra Academy for the Arts continues to invest in emerging talent. By equipping young performers with the skills, discipline, and courage to thrive, TAFTA ensures that Nigerian theatre can compete and shine on global stages.

As the curtain fell, the audience left inspired — reminded that the voices of TAFTA participants are not just tomorrow’s promise, but today’s proof that storytelling in Nigeria is alive, bold, and unforgettable.
