TAFTA Grant Writing and Business Development training session happened a few weeks ago at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Lagos. In attendance were the TAFTA staff from Lagos, Ogun, and Kanao as well as the MasterCard Foundation Associates.
The training was organized in order to strengthen the different teams responsible for operations and business development at TAFTA. Mr. Edward Esene, a well-known grant and business development expert facilitated the training throughout the three days.

Development Training
Mr. Edward, the facilitator for the grant writing and business development training taught three different topics over the training session schedule. On the first day, the participants were introduced to business development. The facilitator started by teaching them about the ways to help a business grow. He further brought to light the key pointers for business development such as finding opportunities, building relationships, and overall business operations.
On the second day, attendees learned about business model canvas, proposal development, and business plan writing. On the third day, they learned about access to funds and investment readiness and also how to write winning grants.
The three different topics treated on each day of the training equipped them with the necessary knowledge for running a successful business and writing a winning business proposal and grants. The expectation is that the attendees will learn and invest the skills acquired from the training in TAFTA for greater outcomes.

Day 1
1. Knowledge about the steps involved in carrying out a business consultation. Some of these traits include empathy, diagnostics (Ability to diagnose correctly), goals and ambition (to move the business), baseline assessment, recommendation (advising) & intervention plan, consulting, accountability & follow-up. Then measurement, reporting (Detailed Report), and documentation.
2. The five pillars of business development; Research, Strategy/Advisory, Marketing and Sales, Training/Facilitation, and Project Management.
Day 2
The second day of TAFTA grant writing and business development training left the attendees with knowledge including
1. Business Marketing and strategies.
2. The Unsolicited and Solicited business proposals.
3. How to advise business owners on how to grow and manage their business.
Day 3
The third day of TAFTA grant writing and business development training saw to the attendees acquiring knowledge on
1. Writing a convincing business proposal to secure funds from organizations.
2. Cashflow management strategies including, forecast cashflow, invoice customers faster, negotiate cash flow, build a cash reserve, and manage accounts, technology, and tax advantages. In addition, conducting customer credit checks, monitoring stock levels, preparing accurate invoices, inventory management, digitizing your payments, etc.
3. The four levels of money and financial success:
- Financial literacy
- Cash flow management
- Funding strategy
- Investment Readiness
The class was concluded with Grant Writing Training. The TAFGT staff who participated in the training acquired enough executable knowledge and are on the lookout for the next TAFTA training session.
